French Toast!

Two mornings this week we got up early and had breakfast together as a family. Let’s just say we’re still ironing out the kinks…

Wednesday morning I got up around 6:30am and started frying sausage and mixing scrambled eggs. I got everyone else up at 7am. Julia came downstairs smiling; happy to smell sausage and see sunshine. Kate, Sam, and Naomi were also eager, and Charlie wasn’t to far behind. Josh and Ellynne stumbled downstairs and sat quietly clutching cups of coffee. Maddie missed her wake up call but did showed up eventually and seemed content to be there. We ate and had devotions, finishing up around 7:40am-ish. As it turned out, this was not enough time to finish lunches, comb hair, sign last minute permission slips, and write checks for expensive “must-have” calculators. The kids ran to the waiting bus and annoyed busdriver- not good.

Thursday morning I got up at 6:15am, started frying bacon, making coffee, and dipping french toast. The kids up at 6:30am. Julia, Kate, Sam, and Naomi came down with eager expectation once again, and Charlie followed soon after. Maddie was next ( she had requested a more strenuous wake up call) and helped me get everything to the table. Josh was not up and it took several trips by several not-so-willing siblings to get him up. Ellynne arrived sleepily shortly before Josh. “How long are we going to be doing this breakfast thing?” I’d been expecting this question, but I held out on an answer.

At 7:20am we finished up and proceeded to: make tuna and stuff it into sandwiches, comb hair, sign chocolate sale permission slips (after arguing over who this year’s chocolate salesman would be), look high and low for Sam’s school shoes(his only pair). After I nearly succumbed to panic, he finally remembered that he’d left them on the front porch. Everyone managed to be waiting for the bus, but I think we may still need to tweek out timing a bit.

All in all, I think it’s beats cold cereal on-the run. Ellynne said “thank-you” before leaving the table Wednesday morning, and Julia said that she hopes we have breakfast together every morning…
